Today, I joined a protest against fake news. We gathered in front of KGW8, a local television channel.
Though the building was mostly empty, a small group of counterprotestors assembled across the street. Two or three of them were hysterical, shouting obscenities at us and calling us Nazis. One man was shrieking “get the fuck out” at the top of his lungs until his larynx almost collapsed.
As our time was up, one of us walked toward his car, which happened to be parked right next to the counterprotesters. As he tried to leave, Mr. Collapsed Larynx forcefully kicked his car several times. I tried to capture it on video, but I wasn’t fast enough.
Lessons learned: Never park in the immediate vicinity of a protest, and if you must, then at least alert your co-protesters prior to heading to your car. We might have been able to prevent it, or at least get it on video.
A few of the apartment-dwellers next to the station stood outside their apartments and screamed “black lives matter” and obscenities at us as well. It’s likely that some of the locals there supported us – but they were too afraid to show it, due to their violent neighbors. It’s hard to blame them.
One kind young man gave me a MAGA hat, which I wore for the last hour or so. It was good against the sun.
I must have been called a Nazi a hundred times today, and it’s nice to have filled my quota for the month.
