Don't dam the river of knowledge

I have some enemies out there.  People who disagree with things I have written.  Well here’s an interesting tidbit:  Even I don’t always agree with the things I have written.  Yes, I sometimes change my mind.  I sometimes write things in order to get people to think, to question what they believe they already know.  I often do so for myself, to help myself develop new neural pathways and keep my mind young.  Blogging is therapeutic.
An ongoing question for me is whether or not I should go back and delete the posts I have had second thoughts about.  Commenters have sometimes raised good objections to what I have written.  On one or two occasions, I have deleted posts that were clearly unfounded.
But there are two types of people in this world:  “Lake people” and “river people”.  Lake people float about, on the waters of knowledge, with no direction.  They drift wherever the winds of fashion nudge them.  At the end of their lives, they are better at floating – but they missed out on the journey of wisdom.
River people have purpose, and an objective, to their floating.  Sometimes the river flows vigorously and all they need to do is lay back and enjoy the ride.  Sometimes the river is sluggish and they must row.  They must often navigate around boulders and logs.  Dangerous fish and crocodiles inhabit the waters and the river people must be wary of them.
The river never ends.  There is no final destination where a river person can rest and say, “I have finally reached my goal”.  This is fortunate – for the satisfaction is in the journey itself, not in its conclusion.
I like to think of myself as a river person.  This blog is a chronicle of my journey.  It’s a chronicle of the journeys of all those who comment as well.
So, to the people who condemn me for having bumped into a log or boulder on occasion, I say:  “Go ahead and enjoy your lake.”

    Why I ridicule trolls:
Imperviousness to reason is the Rubicon that separates the land of the loyal opposition from outright trollitory.

Some people who read blogs but don’t have their own blog don’t realize that blogging is about process. We’re sharing our thoughts, not writing a study for peer review. It’s too bad that having a few of these nit-pickers on one’s case can, over time, result in self-censorship.

Let me float (pun intended) an idea before you, simliar to the river/lake metaphor.
When it comes to morality or behavior, there are the people who try to be better people (river), and the people act self-righteous because they belong to a club and you don’t; behavior is irrelevant (lake).
For example, pro-marriage Christians support serial philanderer/divorcee Gingrich because he’s Christian. His actual anti-marriage behavior is irrelevant.
Similiarly, pro-civil-liberties, anti-war progressives support Obama in spite of his attacks on civil liberties and pro-war positions, because he’s (labelled as) progressive (not to mention ethnically correct).

I should make that my signature. But I can go one further. There’s plenty of things I write that I think are correct. But I still don’t like saying any more than most people like hearing. Few things make me more sad than having to argue in favor of a position I wish weren’t true. And then having people whose preferences I actually share hate me for it.

  5. Good writing. I have nothing to add.
