I wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon; it’s not even officially summer, and yet this is what greeted me at my local supermarket this morning:
Yes, those are Dragon Fruits, known as “Pitahaya” here in Dominican Republic. Here’s my first one of the year:
Tradition says that if your first Pitahaya is red, you will have a prosperous and healthy year…
Okay, I just made that up. It was tasty, and considering how early it is in the year, I did have my apprehensions.
They are costly, so I’m considering cutting costs to fit them into my budget. My religion requires it. The ancient Jewish sages said, “He who passes up a good fruit will have to answer to God.” I didn’t make that one up.
Years ago, I established that Dragon Fruit is the best fruit in the world. This fact has not changed; it will ALWAYS be the best fruit in the world.
I have decided to make this day, June 4th, official Dragon Fruit Day (Dia de Pitahaya). If you can acquire Dragon Fruit in your area, I recommend you do so, and make sure to consume some on this auspicious day. If you don’t live in the tropics, then I pity you – because you’ll probably get an inferior Dragon Fruit.
