The slippery slope on which we find ourselves

I recently posted about Britain’s lack of freedom of speech. But things are not much better in the U.S. Even though, in theory, our Constitution guarantees us freedom of speech, in practice we have de-facto laws against it whenever such speech violates certain taboos.
A school girl’s rant against Asians not only put her in a situation where she was forced to grovel, but she faced disciplinary action and death threats for her trouble.
Two other school girls were forced out of their school for airing their own anti-black rant on youtube. This was after they were made to apologize. When will people learn that apologizing does not help when it comes to accusations of racism; it only makes matters worse.
And now a firefighter in Miami is fighting for his job after some facebook comments he made, against black thugs in general – and specifically against Trayvon Martin – were reported to his empl0yer. According to the Daily Dot:

A firefighter in Miami is feeling the heat after posting a message about Trayvon Martin on Facebook.
Miami Dade Fire Rescue is investigating Capt. Brian Beckmann following a rant against Martin and “urban youth.” The screed was posted last Wednesday, not long after it was announced that George Zimmerman would be charged with second-degree murder in the killing of 17-year-old Martin in February.
A person who had access to Beckmann’s Facebook account took a screenshot and sent it to theGrio, a news community site focused on African American issues.
Beckman, a member of Miami Dade Fire Rescue since 1997, was quoted as saying that:

“Listening to Prosecutor [Angela] Corey blow herself and her staff for five minutes before pre-passing judgment on George Zimmerman. The state seeks reelection again, truth aside. I and my coworkers could rewrite the book on whether our urban youths are victims of racist profiling or products of their failed, shitbag, ignorant, pathetic, welfare dependent excuses for parents, but like Mrs Corey, we speak only the truth. They’re just misunderstood little church going angels and the ghetto hoodie look doesn’t have anything to do with why people wonder if they’re about to get jacked by a thug.”

In a private message to theGrio, Beckmann defended his comments.
“I am a private citizen and have the same right to freely express an opinion on any subject that anyone else does,” Beckman reportedly wrote. “I choose not to embellish or alter the facts as your employer chose to do.”

Hopefully, Beckman will stick to his guns and not back down. Either way, we are rapidly approaching a state of affairs where constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech ring hollow.

Diversity: A lose-lose situation

Some London firefighters are being accused of racism, and their department sued, after a case of mistaken identity. According to Yahoo news:

A black firefighter has said he was assaulted, shot with a stun gun and arrested as he tried to help police while he was off-duty, in the latest racism allegation against Scotland Yard.

Edric Kennedy-Macfoy, 28, made a formal complaint after the incident in the early hours of September 4, in which he says he approached police who were dealing with a disturbance to give them a description of a youth he had seen throw a rock at a police van.

The group of six officers, who were dispersing partygoers — some of whom had turned violent — in Harrow, north London, assaulted and insulted Kennedy-Macfoy, according to his account, before deploying the electric shock weapon and detaining him without good cause.

Kennedy-Macfoy was charged with obstructing police, but found not guilty at Brent Magistrates’ Court in February.

The Guardian, which is campaigning on the issue of police racism, quoted Inspector David Bergum as saying in court: “I couldn’t say he was anything to do with the party. The party was all black. He was black. He had driven through the cordon. I had to do a quick risk assessment.”

Race is an important identifier. It goes hand in hand with gender, age, height and clothing. If a group, composed of blacks, is attacking a group of whites, can we really blame the officers for their quick decision to treat the approaching black man as a possible threat? Considering the sad state of affairs in U.K. today, it is almost inevitable that Inspector Bergum will be forced to apologize and Macfoy will win a large sum of money as compensation for the “racial discrimination” he suffered.
This is a built-in flaw of  racial diversity. It’s human nature to notice race – yet the very creed of “diversity”, which puts race above all else, also demands that we often ignore it. There can be little doubt that had Bergum ignored race, and ended up dead as a result, we would not be reading about it on Yahoo news.

"Brilliant scientist" reveals simplistic views on I.Q.

Somebody figured I’d enjoy this talk by Neil deGrasse Tyson. As a matter of fact, I did rather enjoy it. He’s a good speaker and brings up some good points. But what he said at the end gave me pause. In case you don’t want to listen to the entire talk yourself, I have transcribed the relevant parts:

We share like 98% plus identical DNA. We are smarter than a chimpanzee. So let’s invent a measure of intelligence that makes humans unique. Let’s say: Intelligence is your ability to like, compose poetry, symphonies, do art, math and science and so on. Let’s say, okay? Let’s make that as the arbitrary definition of intelligence for the moment. Chimps can’t do any of that. Yet we share 98, 99 percent identical DNA. Okay? The most brilliant chimp there ever was maybe can do a little bit of sign language. Well, our toddlers can do that. Toddlers… So… here’s what concerns me deeply. Deeply. Everything that we are, that distinguishes us from chimps, emerges from that one percent difference in DNA. It has to, ’cause that’s the difference. The Hubble telescope, these grand… that’s in that one percent. Maybe… everything that we are that is not the chimp is not as smart compared to the chimp as we tell ourselves it is. Maybe the difference between constructing and launching a Hubble telescope, and a chimp combining two finger motions as sign language – maybe that difference is not all that great. We tell ourselves it is. Just the same way we label our books optical illusions. We tell ourselves it’s a lot. Maybe it’s almost nothing. How would we decide that? Imagine another life form that’s one percent different from us. In the direction that we are different from the chimp. Think about that. We have one percent difference and we’re building the Hubble telescope. Go another one percent. What are we to they? We would be drooling, blithering idiots in their presence. That’s what we would be. They would take Stephen Hawking and roll him in front of their primate researchers and say, “well this one is like the most brilliant among them because he can do sort of astrophysics in his head. Oh, isn’t that cute! Little Johnie can do that too. Oh, that’s so nice…

If I understood correctly, Tyson is implying the following:
A) That the intelligence of an animal is the same sort of intelligence we humans have, that chimps and humans possess differing amounts of intelligence within a continuum. This is far from certain. Many, especially on the Left, even claim that there is no such continuum among humans. Instead, they believe in a multitude of intelligences.
B) That there is a direct correlation between genetic similarity and intellectual ability. This is as stretch, to say the least. I agreed with Tyson when he suggested that aliens might be as intellectually superior to us as we are to chimps. But for him to imply that the 1% difference, between ourselves and chimps, is what determines the gap – and that a 2% difference would necessarily double the intelligence gap between us – seems astoundingly simple-minded even for a layman. I can think of various animals, whose genomes differ substantially, but whose intelligences are similar. For example, dogs and octopuses don’t even belong to the same phylum, yet they seem to have comparable intelligence. Furthermore, who’s to say that the 1% difference is allocated equally to all abilities, including intelligence? Maybe 99% of that 1% has to do with body hair, opposable thumbs and skeletal structure. It’s true that he said “emerges from that one percent” but, as a scientist, he should have been more clear on this.
C) That “genetic difference” is the same thing as “difference”. The ease with which he equates the 1% difference in genome between humans and chimps with the difference between humans and chimps is disturbing – far more disturbing than the point he’s trying to make. Here is a scientist who seems to be unaware that most of our DNA is “junk DNA”, or that major differences in phenotype can arise from minute differences in genotype. For him to imply that the difference between a human and an ape can be accurately expressed as the percentage difference between our two genotypes is absurd. Would Tyson claim that humans are 75% similar to sponges given that we share about 75% of our DNA? I don’t even understand how it could be said that one species, or individual, is such and such percentage points similar to another – unless we are speaking of a specific trait, such as the ability to jump. If a kangaroo can jump 30 from a standing start, and a human can only jump 5 feet, then we may say that humans and kangaroos are 17% similar when it comes to jumping.
I don’t believe Tyson was aware of what he was implying when he made those statements. In truth, he unwittingly revealed an underlying mentality of the Left: That it is our superior intelligence that defines us as human and that this is the only thing that matters. This is why they get so touchy when we bring up differences in average I.Q. between races; to them, it’s the same as saying that some races are more human than others.
Am I making a big fuss over nothing? Perhaps.

When the Left doesn't like diversity

Take a walk through a Target (but please don’t buy anything) and you’ll see more black faces on the walls than white. White faces are grossly underrepresented in television commercials, government brochures, billboards, magazines etc. But there is one scenario where whites dominate: When depicting bad guys. Washington Mutual bank (before it was bought out) aired blatantly anti-white commercials such as this one:
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ7EIKbnnkw&w=420&h=315]
ADT security systems is notorious for depicting only white burglars in their commercials. Surely they are aware of the discrepancy between their T.V. fantasy land and the real world. Surely they’ve heard, and read, complaints about this matter. But they don’t care; whites don’t riot and whites have no solidarity. Blacks, and Hispanics, will riot and boycott. Whites will not.
Thanks to Portland Realist for pointing out another glaring example of the Left’s hatred for diversity when evil people are being depicted. If we look over the actors and actresses who uttered the “50 most evil movie lines“, we’ll see that almost all of them are white. Similarly (also thanks to Portland Realist), every single one of the “20 greatest movie villains” is white*. So it seems that when it comes to evil, whites may still have a near monopoly. I suppose it’s better than nothing.

*Incidentally, when I submitted a comment pointing this out, the comment appears to have not been approved.

A really good youtube animation about "racism"

I thank shaunantijihad for posting the following video on youtube, and linking to it on American Renaissance.

U.K. readers click here.
Of course it’s not a perfect analogy. The “Indian government” didn’t invite Europeans to come and settle. Then again, the governments we now have in place (in Europe, America and Australia) are replacing their populations without the consent of the governed.

An unusual map of the world

Via mypostingcareer.com, where somebody had quoted one of my posts, I found the westhunt blog. West Hunter has an interesting article on the geographical distribution of new scientific papers, and this accompanying map:

In this world we see another type of “American obesity”, but it’s not one we should be overly worried about. Europe, and to a lesser extent, East Asia, dominate the rest of the world. South America is an emaciated afterthought and Africa is a shriveled appendage dangling from Europe, the only noticeable part being South Africa.

Two new black mob attacks in Portland

Black flash mob violence is not restricted to any single geographical area. It can happen wherever there are blacks. We don’t seem to have white/Asian mob attacks in America. Hat tip to Portland Realist for bringing these two recent incidents to my attention:
1) According to KATU:

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police are investigating another flash mob theft by a group of teens, this time at Nordstrom at the Lloyd Center.
Last week, a group of 16 teens converged on a Southeast Portland convenience store and stole merchandise and then ran out. Police are still investigating the incident.
Friday’s incident happened just after 8 p.m. Police interviewed employees of the store who said a group of approximately 10 black male teenagers were in the store and began taking items and putting them in bags before they ran out the southwest doors of the store toward Northeast 9th Avenue.
Police who checked the area recovered some of the stolen clothing, but did not find the teens, who were between 13 and 19 years old. They were all wearing hats and hoodies with their faces covered.

This is the second such incident in the Portland area recently.
2) Also according to KATU:

PORTLAND, Ore. – A 57-year-old man who asked a group of teenagers to quiet down on a MAX train was assaulted on Friday.
Police were called to the Northeast 60th Avenue MAX platform around 5 p.m. on a report that multiple people were assaulting a man.
When officers arrived, they learned the man had asked a large group of around 15 to 20 black male teenagers to keep it down. That apparently didn’t sit well with the teenagers and some of them allegedly attacked the man.
Police made two arrests – a 15-year-old and 16-year-old were taken into custody. There may be additional arrests as the investigation continues and detectives get a chance to look at TriMet’s surveillance video.

Kudos to KATU for breaking with taboo and identifying the race of the perpetrators. It’s time for Portland area whites to get their concealed carry permit.

"Brazil's Girl Power"

I was reading an old issue of National Geographic and came across an article called “Brazil’s Girl Power“. The article reports decreasing birth rates around the world, but specifically in Brazil. It describes the correlation between lower birth rates and a higher standard of living. It also showcases some young Brazilians and their reasons for wanting fewer children.

Professor Carvalho, retiring head of his university’s School of Economics and one of the most eminent Brazilian demographers of the past half century, now reclined. He put his feet up and smiled. He knew the total number of grandchildren, of course: 26. For much of his working life, he had been charting and probing and writing about the remarkable Brazilian demographic phenomenon that was replicated in miniature amid his own family, who within two generations had crashed their fertility rate to 2.36 children per family, heading right down toward the national average of 1.9.
That new Brazilian fertility rate is below the level at which a population replaces itself. It is lower than the two-children-per-woman fertility rate in the United States. In the largest nation in Latin America—a 191-million-person country where the Roman Catholic Church dominates, abortion is illegal (except in rare cases), and no official government policy has ever promoted birth control—family size has dropped so sharply and so insistently over the past five decades that the fertility rate graph looks like a playground slide.
And it’s not simply wealthy and professional women who have stopped bearing multiple children in Brazil. There’s a common perception that the countryside and favelas, as Brazilians call urban slums, are still crowded with women having one baby after another—but it isn’t true. At the demographic center Carvalho helped found, located four hours away in the city of Belo Horizonte, researchers have tracked the decline across every class and region of Brazil. Over some weeks of talking to Brazilian women recently, I met schoolteachers, trash sorters, architects, newspaper reporters, shop clerks, cleaning ladies, professional athletes, high school girls, and women who had spent their adolescence homeless; almost every one of them said a modern Brazilian family should include two children, ideally a casal, or couple, one boy and one girl. Three was barely plausible. One might well be enough. In a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, an unmarried 18-year-old affectionately watched her toddler son one evening as he roared his toy truck toward us; she loved him very much, the young woman said, but she was finished with childbearing. The expression she used was one I’d heard from Brazilian women before: “A fábrica está fechada.” The factory is closed.
The emphatic fertility drop is not just a Brazilian phenomenon. Notwithstanding concerns over the planet’s growing population, close to half the world’s population lives in countries where the fertility rates have actually fallen to below replacement rate, the level at which a couple have only enough children to replace themselves—just over two children per family. They’ve dropped rapidly in most of the rest of the world as well, with the notable exception of sub-Saharan Africa.

The article goes on to say:

Brazil spans a vast landmass, with enormous regional differences in geography, race, and culture, yet its population data are by tradition particularly thorough and reliable. Pieces of the Brazilian experience have been mirrored in scores of other countries, including those in which most of the population is Roman Catholic—but no other nation in the world seems to have managed it quite like this.

Cynthia Gorney, the author who penned the above article, points out that Brazil’s birth rate is dropping. She points out that this is so in much of the world. She mentions that sub-Saharan Africa is a notable exception and she emphasizes that Brazil is a multi-racial country.
In light of the above, the obvious question should be: Are there differences between the birth rates of white Brazilians, black Brazilians and other groups? Gorney makes no attempt to explain the “notable exception” of sub-Saharan Africa – or what implications this may have on the world as a whole. The printed version of the article even provides us with a world map of human fertility. Though continuing high-fertility is mostly concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa, no explanation is offered as to why this might be so. Other hotbeds of fertility include Papua-New Guinea and Afghanistan. While Afghanistan’s case can be explained by the influence of fundamentalist Islam and its own unique cultural/historical circumstances, New Guinea and sub-Saharan Africa both host a wide array of cultures, languages and religions.
Brazil still has a substantial white population. According to some statistics, almost half of Brazil is white. According to New Zimbabwe.com (2009):

Brazil and its almost 200 million population is no longer a country of white majority. The credit now belongs to the 49.6% black and mulatto population compared to the 49.4% defined as white and this is set to increase in coming years with that percentage increasing to 54, according to a recent report from the Rio do Janeiro Federal University.Professor Antonio Paixao from the Rio University’s Economy Institute believes that since Brazil is no longer a white majority country, “we need a policy of diversity”, which is a great challenge for the political establishment. The black birth rate is also higher than that of the whites or Europeans descendents, so the big question is whether Brazil is prepared to face the fact that blacks and mulattos are becoming a solid majority, and how this will influence legislation, asks Paixao.

It seems to me that the decline in  Brazil’s birth rate is merely a decline in its white birth rate. Unless Cynthia Gorney, and the editors at National Geographic, are total idiots, they must realize that we are not looking at a long-term decline in the overall birth rate at all. What we are seeing is simply a temporary dip due to the elimination of white babies. As the black population grows, and replaces the white population in Brazil, the black birth rate will more than compensate for this dip. In the end, Brazil will be just like Africa. It would appear that this is what Gorney, and her editors at National Geographic, want. If so, then it also follows that they also want the destruction of the Amazon rain forests, the eradication of endangered species therein, the genocide of native peoples and endemic disease and starvation for the remaining (black) human population.

Aren’t these some of the same things the Left habitually accuses conservatives of?

Better late than never

I should have done this a while ago – but better late than never. I appeal to readers of this blog to donate to John Derbyshire in his time of need. He is arguably among the best writers of our time, he is having some health issues and he has just been fired from the increasingly irrelevant National Review. His crime? Giving life-saving advice to young people.

Blacks tip less

I read the source of a recent American Renaissance story and found one comment particularly well-written. It’s from a woman named spicycurrynews:

I currently wait tables and I have for over a decade.  First off, let me say I’m in it for the money!  I’m really good at my job and I rarely make less than 20%.  When I do get a tip under 20% it can usually be divided into one of three categories:
1) Something bad happened with the food or the service and they blame me so I get a poor tip.
2) They give me 15-18% tips because that is their tipping culture and it is in no way a reflection of their experience having been bad (i.e. older folks, people from rural areas).
3) People of certain ethnic and racial backgrounds and/or foreigners who come from non-tipping cultures tend to tip under 10%.
I work at a neighborhood place with a lot of repeat business–a non-corporate, non-chain restaurant. I do not easily forget a face.  I give everyone the same level of service the first time they come in.  Now, if I remember someone is a bad tipper I may not pay as much attention to them as I do a table that I know to be good tippers.  It’s not about race for me; it’s about business.
I don’t think it is incorrect to do this.  Afterall, I’m required to give 25% of my earnings to other people:  the bartender, the busser and the food runner.  If I net 20% I will only walk away with 15% tips at the end of the night.  If a table chooses to only give me a 5% tip then essentially I have worked for free because all of those earnings go to the restaurant’s other staff.  So yeah, the last two times I waited on a group of gay black guys they left me less then a 5% tip and after years of experience I can tell you the service on my end was flawless.  The next time they come in I will be polite and efficient but I won’t pay a lot of extra attention to them.  Why should I when they always make me work for free?
Of course I am polite to everyone but this is business.  Afterall, I could wait on the same group of people next week.  But after more than 15 years of total experience working in restaurants let me give you the generalizations.  Of all ethnic groups, the worst tips I’ve ever gotten were from black people.  The second worst tips I’ve gotten have been from Spanish-speaking customers.  In the case of latinos, the tip almost always goes up the second time they come in when they find out freckly little me is a Spanish speaker and that I’m married to a latino.  And that’s not racist of them?

Thank you Spicy! That was a very well-written account.
